Mastering Canadian Sales Tax
Taxes can be confusing. Whether you are adding GST to an invoice, configuring HST for out-of-province clients, or extracting reverse-taxes for bookkeeping, accuracy is critical.
Understanding the 3 Tax Types
Depending on which province you operate in or ship to, you need to apply different rates. Here is a breakdown of the three main tax categories.
Provincial Sales Tax
A tax collected by the province. Used in BC, SK, MB (as RST) and QC (as QST). It is charged in addition to the federal GST.
Goods & Services Tax
The federal flat tax of 5% applied nearly everywhere. If a province has PST, you apply both the 5% GST and the local PST explicitly on invoices.
Harmonized Sales Tax
Used in ON, NB, NS, NL, and PEI. It is simply the GST and PST bundled together into one single percentage (usually 13% or 15%).
When do I need to charge tax?
Under Canadian law, you only *have* to register for and charge GST/HST once your revenue exceeds the Small Supplier Threshold of $30,000 CAD over four consecutive calendar quarters.
However, many businesses choose to voluntarily register for GST/HST before hitting the threshold. Doing so allows you to claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) to recover the GST/HST you paid on your business expenses and equipment.
